Well, I’ve actually slept over 8 hours a night for the last three nights. Much better than the 4 or 5 hours I’ve been getting for the last 4 months!!
My sweetie’s chauffeured me all over the area these last few days. I am now the proud owner of a pair of Hunter Balmoral Wellies (with hot pink welly socks to wear with them), a Marks & Sparks jacket to fend off wind and rain, and a new coffee maker and grinder. We were supposed to go to a rugby match yesterday, but it was extremely chilly and very damp, and I just couldn’t face it. So, instead, we hopped in the car and drove two hours to a lovely town called Farringdon, just south of Oxford. It’s in the Cotswolds and stunningly beautiful. Once we arrived, we went to the local piano shop and bought ourselves a piano. About twice the price we’d budgeted, but worth it, as the difference in tone and richness of sound was massive. It will be delivered at the latest Thursday week (a week Thursday in Canuck). They’re going to try to get it to us earlier, however, as the woman there loved that two days in my top priority was buying our piano!
As we got into the car
for the drive home, it began to snow. We stopped at an inn called The
Greyhound about 6 miles south of Oxford for dinner. 17th
century structure, picturesque in that quintessential English way and
very good food. Stepped out to get back in the car and it was still
snowing. Before long, we were in the middle of a good old fashioned
snowstorm with almost two hours left to drive!! Thank goodness for sat
nav, as we’d be lost in the roundabouts without it. Still, we added 10
miles to our journey when we took the wrong exit and wound up going back
toward Oxford, instead of Northampton as we were meant to. The sat nav
tried to get my sweetie to do U-turns twice, but with traffic and snow,
visibility extremely reduced, he wasn’t confident to do so. Finally Sat
Nav Nelly (so I’ve dubbed her) became quite insistent, “Make a U-turn,”
she kept saying. “U-turn NOW”. Luckily, there was a proper turning lane
at that point, so we turned around and started back. Did the roundabout
twice this time to make sure we knew which exit (the signs were fast
becoming obliterated by snow) and found our way to the M1. 35 miles of
snowstorm to drive through at very reduced speeds. People pulling over
all along the route. Finally, our exit was there and we were on
completely snow covered roads. People were pushing cars up hills,
getting stuck. One poor man was at the local Chinese take-out and
couldn’t get his car out. Had to walk home with his dinner, arguing with
his wife the entire way about how long it was going to take. The
laneway into our house is quite narrow, and the driveway entry is just
barely wide enough for the car, but somehow, my sweetie got us into the
driveway, burning rubber as he went. I think we’ll have to replace some
sod come spring.
Anyway, that’s the news for now.
We
had drinks with the neighbours last night, who blamed me for bringing
winter with me. Apparently, it’s been ten years since they had snow like
this! LOL
